With a 17-year production run from 1964 to 1981, the Mercedes-Benz 600 stands as one of the most advanced and imposing cars of its era. Bristling with sophistication and luxury, it was the ride of choice for heads of industry, leading entertainers, dignitaries, and even Pope Paul VI. Offered as a standard-wheelbase four-door sedan and a stretched Pullman limousine with either four or six doors, the 600 featured a hydraulic system powering nearly every amenity, including the doors, trunk lid, windows, sunroof, partition wall, seat adjusters, and self-levelling suspension. Although more efficient than available electronic alternatives, the hydraulic system drew enough power to prompt Mercedes’ first-ever V-8 engine—the 6.3-liter M100—to cope with its demands, while still offering solid performance. Whether driving or being chauffeured in one, praise for the 600 was and remains unanimous. Of the 2,677 Mercedes-Benzes built, just 487 were Pullmans.

This example was delivered new to the US market. A copy of its original production invoice on file, dated 15 September 1969, shows a dispatch date of 18 November 1969. The car was finished from the factory in Midnight Blue with its spacious rear compartment featuring two rows of facing seats upholstered in special-order blue velour amid beautifully grained Macassar hardwood trim. On the forward side of the partition wall, with its integrated beverage chiller and power-operated divider window, the driver compartment came lined in black leather. Factory options noted on a copy of the car’s original build card included air conditioning, heat-insulating glass with heated rear window, and a Becker Europa AM/FM radio.

This prized Pullman was acquired by acclaimed film producer, the late James G. Robinson, in the late seventies from Chicago businessman Harry Woodworth. Mr. Robinson co-founded Morgan Creek Productions, which orchestrated numerous Hollywood hits, including Young Guns, Major League, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, True Romance, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, among others. Mr. Robinson held a deep affinity for the Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman, owning four examples over the course of his life. He used them regularly for important meetings, business dinners, and Hollywood functions, and they became his preferred mode of transport in his later years. This particular example was his favorite, a treasured centerpiece of his collection for five decades.
