Tara Browne's psychedelic AC Cobra

Swinging Sixties, London was the place to be. And more specifically... Carnaby Street. If you were really with the in-crowd it was all happening there. Hip clothes and of course psychedelic art. The first image of psychedelic car art that springs to mind is of course John Lennon's bizarre painted Rolls-Royce, but there have been more. Like the 1965 AC Cobra bought by Tara Browne, heir to the Guinness brewery fortune and close friend of both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Upon delivery of the Cobra, Tara Browne took it to pop-artist Dudley Edwards, who some say was the creator of the entire look and movement. Dudley gave the Cobra its weird paint finish. It was then displayed as art on Robert Frazers Gallery on Duke Street in St James' (top photo).

Before he could drive the Cobra, Tara Browne died in a tragic car accident. The AC Cobra was then removed from the Gallery, painted black, and sold. After having been in a private collection for more than forty years, it will be offered by Coys at their auction at Blenheim Palace on June 29. Too bad the AC doesn't have its psychedelic coat anymore. Now to bring it back to its sixties glory, would probably be the first psychedelic restoration.
