We’ve seen some pretty remarkable collections in the past. A chap with over 100 finned Americans, another with least as many 2CVs, guys with fine coachbuilt Brits or gatherings of Etceterinis. But the stuff that James Hull amassed in the past 35 years will have to be seen to be believed, largely due to the sheer quantity of it. Mister Hull, who made his fortune in cosmetic dentistry, gathered so many vehicles that the hangar near Ross-on-Wye where he stores them is now home to ‘the United Kingdom’s biggest private classic car collection’. You’ll stumble upon 457 British classics here, plus 365 pedal cars and some 300 pieces of memorabilia. And the only reason for these pictures to emerge from it now is that he wants to sell the whole of it in one lot. Asking price: £100,000,000. Yes: one hundred million pounds.
So what do you get for that money? There are some pretty desirable Jags: an XKSS, a C-type and D-type for example plus a handsome and concours-winning SS1 Coupe. There’s not one but two 1954 Bentley R-type Continentals for style and you’ll like an Allard Safari and Graber bodied Alvis for eccentricity. But as a matter of fact the majority of this collection appears to consist of bread-and-butter Brits. Standards, Morrises, Rileys, Hillmans, Wolseleys, Humbers, Austins. Very nice, oh yes, don’t get us wrong. But if you think they come at just under 219,000 per car it seems rather steep.
