LeMay Museum invites Don Oscar from Mexico?

We received a letter from LeMay (America’s Car Museum) that they’re planning to celebrate Volkswagen and are looking to showcase a variety of VW models for this occasion. Well, we might have a great candidate for them… though it could set them a heavy task.

Meet Don Oscar, an 83-year-old Mexican, who’s living in his 1967 VW Beetle for over ten years now. After a painful divorce, Don Oscar was left with nothing but his ‘Vocho’ as the Mexicans call their beetles. His pension was barely enough to buy some food, let alone rent a place to stay.

And so Vocho became his home. He turned the backseat into his bedroom and used nooks and crannies as his storage space. Of course maintenance has been basic. Don Oscar restores rusting spots which several layers of common-oil based paint, applied with a brush. The wheels are from another Volkswagen as well as the engine which can be started by short-circuiting two wires located in the front truck. As a gear shift he uses a plastic bathroom pipe.

As time passed by, he seemed to grow fond of his home. He friendly declines any offer to lodge in and also wouldn’t sell his Vocho, no matter what was bidden. Home is where the heart is… or in this case where the beetle is.
