Visitor Jon recently bought this old press photo with added comment: "This is the new Maserati 5050 cc which will compete in the 24 hours of Le Mans, with favorite Maglioli at the wheel. The race will be on 18 June. The photo is showing the car during training at the circuit of Modena."
Mystery-mystery... We found that maglioli drove a 250F at the Nuburgring in 1956. But a Maserati at Le Mans with Umberto at the wheel??? So far Jon nor we have not been able to identify the exact Maserati involved. Is it a 1956 300S ? Can you fill in the blanks?
UPDATE by James Helms: The Maser pictured is the Tipo 65 Le Mans as seen at Modena in June 1965. The Tipo 65 was a 5 litre fuel injected V8 mid engine car which was painted white with three blue stripes wearing the number 8 for Le Mans. The drivers were Siffert and Neerspasch. Siffert lost control on the first lap and damaged the front body and radiator. The regulations did not allow water to be added thus ending the cars race. According to Joel Finn "Siffert later remarked that the Tipo 65 was the most frightening race car he ever drove, with a mind of its own at high speed".
