Last week's Tough to crack puzzle was one that we expected to be a real tough one. And when the first answer started with “Uh-Oh my god!”, we were curious to read the answers. But still a lot of you knew this little blue car.
The photo was taken by Via Flaminia Rallies on one of their rallies at the Automobile museum in Tbilisi, so if you want to know in which collection this car is, visit their website (or even better, participate yourself and see it in real life!)
Back to the car, it was indeed a “Russian micro car for invalides". A SMZ S3D IVALIDKA built by a Russian motorcycle factory starting 1939 as CMB. They started with a 3 wheeler and by 1970 the car progressed to the car in question. It is accounted for as one of the most expensive cars in the world as it costs you a leg or an arm. The car was designed to last 5 years, after that time the government took it, scrapped it and you would get a new one. This is why they are quite rare: single cyl. motorcycle engine, 14hp, only hand controlled 4 speed forward and reverse!
Only invalides were entitled to receive one but being Russia, I wonder how many ended up in privileged families for their kids. There is also a fantastic video on youtube, just type SMZ INVALIDKA”(Erler Thomas).
Thank you Erler, we googled for the movie and found it here
But we also asked for the source where you found the information. And some of you used Wikipedia, even the Russian one.
Fried Stol told us that the car is loud and noisy. The nickname was “Little Toad” as the first ones only came in green. Gerd Klioba added that 223,051 of these invalid carriages were built. Verner Johnsen added: 223,051 of these invalid carriages were built and although it is a small car, at one occasion 11 people squeezed into one "Invalidka"
This makes Verner Johnsen the winner of this week, the extra info he gave us is fantastic. Thanks guys
