An experiment that 'broke down'.

To help stranded motorists the Automobile Association of the UK had been using motorcycle combinations equipped with tools, spare parts and fuel since long before World War II. Post-war, when traffic increased, the AA wanted to evaluate their services on the roads. One such attempt was this 1947 Tri-Car, made by the Dot Motorcycle company from Manchester. The Dot was powered by a 122cc Villiers two-stroke engine. Instead of a side car to carry the spares, Dot mounted a large box between the two front wheels. Testing began in January 1948 when the Dot Tri-Car was stationed at Pains Hill on the Portsmouth Road. After six months the AA concluded that the Tri-Car offered no advantages over the BSA motorcycle combinations and it was withdrawn from service. Many years later the Dot was found in a neglected state and restored to its present condition. A real show stopper, it will be offered by Bonhams at their Beaulieu Auction on September 8.
