Art That Moves You

'Making Art that moves you', seems an apt motto for the General Motors Design Center. They are now in business for 85 years and during that time they have turned out some exceptional automobiles, some of which made it to production and many others never did. Yet they were influential for their time, like the 1951 Buick LeSabre show car that preluded the tailfin rage of the 1950s. It was designed by the famous Harley Earl who was hired by GM in 1927 to "study the question of art and color combinations in General Motors products" (click here for movie!). The Buick LeSabre remained a prototype, but one dream car that did make it into production was the beautifully styled 1963 Buick Riviera. We remember that at the time of introduction we saw the futuristic vertical headlight covers and thought: "Wow, if we are ever going to own an American car, this is the one!"
