If you are up for some genuine American iron this Christmas, Sonicbidder.com is at your service with a great number of all-American automobiles offered at its Christmas Around the World sale on 8 December. But there are also several British thoroughbreds and some Italian stallions. We thought we’d pick out the three most atypical cars on offer. These are the ones you certainly won’t see at every auction in the US.
First of them is a Salmson S4-61 with its 2312cc four-cylinder engine and in a rather stunning colour combination of bright yellow and cream outside and red inside. There certainly can’t be many of those cars around in America and this particular car, although on French plates (Department 66 or the Pyrénées-Orientales in the far south), is believed to have been imported from Belgium before coming to the US. Although the S4-model was launched way before WW2, this one is a 1949 model, which makes it a very late car.
Next up is a 1972 Honda N600 in a pretty sorry state. What makes it interesting though is that this little micro zoomer with its 32hp two-cylinder engine is in fact the first car Honda imported into the US. Or is it? From the seller’s blurb: “The Honda N600 was first imported to the United States in 1970, becoming the first production Honda car to be imported to the United States, it was eventually switched out by the historic Honda Civic in 1973, and the rest is history. With few N600s remaining or coming up for sale in the United States, almost all the Honda N600s that do surface are considered a rare sighting, no matter what shape they are in.” That had us confused. But with just 23,081 miles on the clock this seems to be one that would be a lovely restoration project anyway.
Last atypical offering from the auctioneer is a 1958 AC Aceca in stunning red with grey Connolly leather interior. The Aceca is of course the coupé variant of the British Ace before it had any Cobra connections. There’s an AC six-in-line with some 95hp under the bonnet and it’s a relatively rare example of a left hand-drive. It is fully restored and looks absolutely stunning. We could live with finding this under the Christmas tree!
