Avoiding the 'R' word

Over the years some ingenious names have been dreamt up for newly built classics or quite ordinary cars that were turned into quite extraordinary ones. We’ve seen ‘evocations’, ‘tributes’, ‘elaborations’, ‘recreations’ plus ‘sanction IIs and IIIs - all with the idea in mind to avoid the replica designation. At Coys’ next Saturday’s auction at the Nurburgring quite a few cars in this category will make it to the block. Apart from the obvious C-type, there is an Aston Martin DBR1 tribute, a DBR2 recreation, an Alfa Disco Volante Evocazione, a Porsche 935 K3 conversion, a 911 RS/R modification, a Maserati 450S Evocation plus even a Multipla Abarth tribute. A good development? It does make me wonder what the entry list for their True Greats auction in December will look like. (text Jeroen Booij)
