Back to back: Jowett or Daimler needing (final) touches?

The 2019 season is approaching rapidly, but there is still time to finish a car. And Brightwells is offering you a chance or two, with their sale at Leominster tomorrow (click here).

We fell for the eccentricity of a 1952 Jowett Jupiter, which needs not too much work to get it finished, or so it seems. All the hard work has been carried out on this one. And that includes its flat-four engine and suspension, its aluminium body including new wings, a new hood, new windscreen and a respray in BRG. The seats were reupholstered and the woodwork was re-veneered also. The current owner supposedly spent £30,000 on the project to date while it is estimated to sell at £10- to £20,000, indicating that the seller is not quite so sure which way it can go.

Oh, it’s got history, too, with one owner between 1972 and 2010. The seller states that one or two items are missing (the air vents, apparently, which may be found in time for the sale) but there is no doubt that the majority of the work has been done. This could be a real steal for someone…

Slightly less eccentric and probably not quite so easy to get back in a lovely condition is the Daimler SP250 offered in the same sale. This is a 1963 car, built on a traditional ladder chassis never the less, and with fibreglass body unlike any other model.

This early car in Mountain Blue was registered in May ’63 and has been in its current father and son ownership since 1983, having been stored for the last five years or so. It starts, runs and drives, say Brightwells, but would certainly benefit from a restoration. To quote them: “This is a highly original example of this rare and fruity V8 which could be lovingly restored to its former glory or simply used and improved over time.” Estimate: £23- to £25,000. We have a clear favourite. How about yourself?
