Back to back: low mileage Jap fastbacks

Sure, one of them comes with a 2.4 litre six-in-line pumping out 130hp, while the other only uses an 800cc four-cylinder good for 70hp. But both of these late 1960s fastbacks that are offered for sale by H&H Auctions tomorrow in the Imperial War Museum in Duxford have one thing in common, which places them in the same book here: their Japanese origins.

To start with the smaller one of the two: this Honda S800 is believed to have just covered 56,505 miles from new, although it must have been resprayed from its original yellow to white at some stage in its life. There’s another snake in the grass: the 791cc DOHC, known for being happy to rev up to 8,500rpm, doesn’t start at the moment ‘owing to a starter motor issue’. We do find it a very desirable little fastback, though, and, who knows, you may even get lucky with the estimate of 1- to 13,000 pounds. Find out more here.

The Datsun 240Z is only classed slightly higher, estimated at 15- to 17,000 pounds but is another pretty cool vehicle. It’s an ex-California lhd car that is supposedly never been restored. The auctioneer states it may well be “one of the best unrestored and original examples remaining”. On its import from the US to the UK it has been fully recommissioned and serviced with full overhaul of its Hitachi carburettors. What’s more: “The Datsun comes complete with a California odometer statement confirming the pleasingly low mileage of 35,000.” Find it here.

We have up our own minds about these two, but wonder: what is your favourite?
