A very British take on Japanese cars

This 5 minute video from the BBC archive is simply brilliant. It's about the village of Moor Row in Cumberland, its inhabitants and their love for Datsuns. Aided by brown suited salesmen Fred and Harry Steele, who run their Datsun dealership from the old village church, the number of Datsuns in Moor Row exploded in just over a year time. Not to everyone's liking. The ex-serviceman in overalls who fought the Japanese in war clearly hates the Datsuns that are everywhere in his village: "They're junk, camouflaged junk!" And there's the Asian inhabitant of Moor Row who prefers to drive his Vauxhall over a Datsun.

The other side of the spectrum shows the family man, happy with his Cedric, who is asked: "Aren't you ashamed that you buy a foreign car when the British car industry needs your support?" His answer, without giving a crinch: "Have we got a car industry?" These characters, together with the tongue-in-cheek commentator makes it a must-see: "As the Moor Row kamikaze division sets out for a Sunday Sortee, we ask: what has happened to the traditional British craftsmanship, which gave us the Austin Seven, the Morris Minor and the Bridge on the river Kwai?" Enjoy this gem.
