Upcoming autocrats and budding dictators gather at Coys’ Techno Classica sale this weekend in Essen. The auctioneers from London offer stately four-door cars fit for a despot with a soft spot for any possible motoring nation. From Italy comes a lovely Series 1 Maserati Quattroporte, which was sold new to the Aga Khan in distinctive dark blue, while the US brings in a Cadillac Fleetwood Limousine Imperial (photo above) by Derham with tinted windows and air con.
Russia is represented by a nicely preserved Gaz 14 Chaika, purchased directly from the Lithuanian Government while the UK is good for a left hand driven Daimler DS420 in ‘Embassy Black’ and with under 30,000 kms on its clock. This car is believed to have been used by the ‘Joint Services Liaison Organisation’ and possibly links to Mrs Thatcher, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Duchess of Gloucester.
The Mercedes Benz 300 Limousine from Germany also seems in superb fettle, but best of all has to be the entry from France: a most impressive Facel Vega Excellence which had one owner since it was new in 1959. This man from Portugal travelled a mere 46,000 kilometres in all those years. Still on its original tyres, Coys says the level of originality is startling. The ideal starting point for an up-and-coming head of state with taste?
