Dutch fifties racer to be restored; info needed!
After WWII the Dutch Zandvoort Racing Circuit was realised and several local youngsters were attracted to it and started to race in anything that had an engine and wheels. Among them was Willem Blankevoort from Haarlem and after racing his mother’s 1936 Lancia Augusta he decided to built his own racecar.
In the 1950s a Maserati A6 CGS was the ultimate racing sportscar and in the metalshop of his dad’s conctruction firm, a copy of an A6CGS chassis was produced. The Lancia Augusta was taken apart and the rear axle and special Lancia frontaxle were fitted to the chassis. Initially it also had the engine of the Lancia Augusta, but later this was replaced by a stronger MGengine.
With a locally designed and produced aluminium body the “Blankevoort Special” was raced by its creator between 1955 and 1960 and then it was laid up. The car is featured in the Dutch book “Autodesign in Nederland” by Jan Lammerse.
At the moment it is being restored to its former glory by Erik van Hardeveld in Elst. The Netherlands, who is desperately looking for information on this piece of Dutch Racing History. Anything is of interest. If you think you can help, please contact Erik on [email protected]
