Fiat Otto Vu in the days before pampering

Let’s get things straight: this simply has to be one of the best pictures of girls on cars. It’s unposed, it’s real and it’s very desirable. From what we understand it was taken in Rimini in 1960. Judging by the shadow (click main photo first) in the lower right hand corner from the window of a (summer’s?) house. The blonde and brunette remain anonymous, but the chap who took it must have been the owner of the car, said to be a playboy of 26 years by the name of Enrico Fabbri (related to the car-mad ‘Fratelli Fabbri’ family?) The car is a 1953 Fiat 8V bodied by Vignale, with its design clearly coming from the hand of Giovanni Michelotti. Fabbri surely knew how to enjoy the then-7 year old thoroughbred. It had already changed owners seven times and colours just a few times less when he got it. (see todays livery, here in fully pampered condition at Concours Het Loo 2014)

I bet he snapped his photograph without the girls knowing of him stalking them. They jumped up, yelling, giggling, after hearing the click of his Rolleiflex. What if the girls scratch the paint on that delicate aluminium body? Oh come on, than you just give it another quick layer of paint, won’t you? Praise the man to use his coachbuilt beauty like that now. Have a laugh. And a Campari.
