It may be hard to see on this particular picture but this is the Ford Consul Classic which has, like the Ford Anglia, the reverse raked rear window. Controversial in its day. It even turned out that this design trick didn’t particularly - erm - improve sales, and so it may have been a marketing thing to photograph the car with the boot open. ‘A great opportunity to show the size of the boot!’, you hear the PR men in Dagenham exclaim. But an open boot is just an open boot, isn’t it? So how do you properly show its size? Of course. By putting something really big into it. No, not just a golfing set or a suitcase. Not even a whole set of suitcases, with the obvious beauty case on top. That beach chair over there - that could be good. Hang on - I’ve got a brilliant idea. Why not put somebody in it? Not one of those skinny models - they will make it look small again. How about my mother-in-law?
