‘Mille Miglia eligible’ has become the phrase to park any pre-’57 sports car in the price lift. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL overcame this hype a few decades ago allready and this year’s version of the former Italian road race counts no fewer than 29 of them. Twenty-nine! Yep, that makes the Gullwing – as pretty as it is - the Volkswagen of the event. Yet not every 300 SL is equal, some are simply more equal than others.
Take this well used car for instance. Apart from being the 1955 show car in London and Paris, it was also the reconnaissance car for Moss and Jenks for that year’s Mille Miglia, meaning the British duo hammered this car down the route prior to famously winning the event in the 300 SLR (We do recommend to check the condition of chassis and suspension before forking out your wallet). However - hammering may not seem the right word when you look at this picture of Moss driving it. Here we see a gentleman in pinstripe and tie rather than in racing gear. Thus looking more like a self-assured banker than world’s number 1 racing driver of his time. The angled arms and driving gloves are the only clues to the controlled drift the big coupe is taken in. Very relaxed. Very cool. Maybe that will be the way to lift your Gullwing back to attention. To drive it in correct racing attire as demonstrated by Sir Moss himself.
