If Formula One is your passion, you may like to know that owning an F1 car has never been as easy as it is today, particularly when you can buy one from behind your desk at the Auto Exotix auction by sonicbidder.com, which closes on the 29th of this month.
Looking at the cars on offer in chronological order, the 1960 Scarab-Offenhauser is the first and it’s quite a machine, too. It is screaming American racing colours and has a similarly screaming four-cylinder 2.5-litre engine. This car was driven by Stirling Moss against Maseratis and Ferraris in its day, and won several times. “It will stand on its own against any European circuits”, adds the seller and we’d say there is no doubt about that.
Not an F1, but included in the sale nevertheless, is the ex-Jim Palmer car, a 1500cc-engined Lotus type 20B, that made it to the grids in 1961. Palmer was a New Zealander who raced his car locally, mostly in competition with several F1s. It went to the US in 1990 where it was fully restored and is now race-ready.
Making a bit of a jump, time-wise, we come to the 1983 RAM March that was raced in the F1 circus that year by Kenny Atchenson and Jaques Villeneuve. It’s been raced throughout the world, including by its current (US) owner, and won the Masters F1 World Championship in the hands of its previous owner. Detailed records and several spares are included.
The 1990s are represented by a Lola T97/30 of 1996. Built in collaboration with sponsor Mastercard for the 1997 season, it has a chassis of carbon fibre and is of aluminium honeycomb monocoque construction. The drivers were Vincenzo Sospiri and Ricardo Rosset who unfortunately failed to qualify. The engine is a three-litre Ford ECA Zetec-R V8.
Now, if even that doesn’t make you feel like a team boss or a driver yet, Auto Exotix may have one final lot to persuade you and blow away all your F1 friends. How about the original 2006 Ford IVECO Motorhome as used by the Ferrari Schumacher team? “Enjoy the very space that Schumacher himself spent countless hours preparing for races and living out some of his most winning seasons.” Crikey, it does look like a luxurious place, with even the toilet seat being colour coded in Ferrari Rosso. Going once, going twice…
