Icon in Fibreglass

From the moment Harley Earl, GM's legendary Vice-President of Styling, showed his dream car at the 1953 General Motors Motorama, everybody loved the Corvette. Despite this enthusiasm production planning didn’t foresee large sales, so instead of a conventional steel body, they used fiberglass, a then-new lightweight material. The first 300 were virtually hand-built and many changes were made before production started in earnest. This one is a 1954 model that will be offered on September 12 by Bonhams during their auction at the Fairfield County Concours. (photos courtesy Bonhams)
