Like a duck to water

We were quite surprised when we looked though the catalogue of upcoming lots for Bonhams' online MPH auction and came across this machine. A remarkable 1943 GMC DUKW 353. As you may understand, today no 'back to back' comparison, but there is something particularly interesting about this vehicle.

1943 GMC DUKW 353

The amphibious troop carrier on offer was manufactured by General Motors in 1943 and weighs no less than 2.5 ton. This 6-wheel drive, with a powerful 4,425cc six-cylinder engine, was delivered to the British armed forces in June of that year. It served the 19 Amphibious Squadron of the Royal Corps of Transport, but unfortunately there is no record of its wartime involvement with the D-Day landings.

In the early 1970s, the vehicle moved to the Royal Corps of Transport Museum. It became part of a collection at the School of Mechanical Transport which was loaned to the Museum of Army Transport in Beverley, Yorkshire. All this time it remained property of the Ministry of Defence. 77 YP 09 was serviced and maintained by military engineers and was kept in running order until in 2003 the museum closed.

This model 353, registered as 77 YP 09 (army registration), comes with a report on its original specifications, a Vehicle Data Card, and is estimated to sell for £ 18,000 - 20,000.

Is this something for you? Or a little too far outside of your comfort zone?
