There’s no doubt that our contributor Jeroen Booij has a taste for the weird, wacky and wonderful. His 2009 book Maximum Mini gave an insight in the world of all things Mini based, from Autocars to Zagato with anything Broadspeed and Unipower in between. Many would have believed that this would have covered the subject, but as it now turns out it was only a glimpse into the universe of mad Mini variants.
Booij carried on with his researches and now comes with the sequel. It describes another 60 cars in detail and again, it’s the oddities and their stories that lift this book to great levels of motoring amusement. How about the ASD Hobo meant to become the answer to a famine in Sudan? The Mini Beach Car driven by the Queen herself or the Aurora BMC of Lotus-ace Trevor Taylor and his pretty sister Anita? There are clever contraptions privately built by Aston Martin designer William Towns or by a Le Mans veteran who became Ferrari-concessionaire in Saint-Tropez. There is the Grantura Yak dreamt up by a former TVR-director who got thrown out because of another financial catastrophe. The IGM Minbug – race-ace Gordon Murray’s oldest existing car - was found by Booij in a scrapyard during his researches. With British publishers being put off with so much eccentricity, our man decided to publish the book by himself. Be sure to get your hands on the new book Maximum Mini 2.
