In 1960 a Mercedes-Benz 300D -also known as the “Adenauer-Mercedes”- was presented to Pope John XXIII by representatives from Untertürkheim. Not a standard 300D, instead the new popemobile had been extensively modified. The 300D was converted into a landaulet with an extended wheelbase, 450-millimeter longer than the standard model. It had a soft-top above the rear compartment and a hard-top above the front seats. Further equipment were white-walled tires, running boards and a single seat in the rear that was surrounded with controls for air conditioning, two-way radio and other functions. More than enough comfort for those long journeys if you ask us. (photos courtesy Daimler AG)
