Salon Privé, held last week on a stone’s throw from London’s Kew Gardens, has become the UK’s most prestigious concours d’elegance in just a few years time. Prestigious, yes, with hospitality tickets starting at just under 200 GBP. And so you could stumble upon all the usual suspects. 1920s Bugattis, 1960s Ferraris, modern-day supercars – they were all there. Again. Fortunately, there were a few suprises, too. And the best one actually was a rarely seen British car.
Well, partly at least. This stunning styling exercise was based on a suposedly rather tired Rover 2000 TC by Zagato in 1967, with the Italian stylists hoping that Rover would include it as a ‘special order only’ model. It never happened. After being shown at the Earl’s Court Motor Show the sole TZC sold to a Brit for £2,850, who used it on a daily basis for some time. After that the TCZ faded into obscurity, with only a Lancia production model reminiscing it. The car had previously been seen on meetings in the UK but its last appearance dated back to many years ago and Rover as well as Zagato fans actually wondered if the car survived. It does, and in what stunning condition. Next to those much-hyped Zagato cars (below) it certainly stood out!
