There have been several miracles in the world of classic cars and the sudden rise of prices is definitely on top of the list of inexplicabilities. Anyone out there who never thought “I wish I had actually bought this or that car when it was offered to me several decades ago, just look what they are worth now!?” We all know the stories of Ferraris and Bugattis that changed hands for a crate of apples. But there have been some less usual suspects, too. And the Citroen DS Décapotable may have been the greatest surprise of them all. Prices doubled, tripled, quadrupled, multiplied in a very short period of time, with the peak some years ago now, when one individual shelved out an incredible 337,497 Euros for a 1973 example in a frightfully dull colour.
That makes you wonder what happened to the car on this picture, said to be based on a 1968 DS21 and one of the 1,365 or so examples officially built (there must have been just as many unofficially). For this one not only comes in a far more attractive Gris Impérial (gun metal grey) - no, it was used by one of Europe’s major sex symbols of the time above all. Yep, that’s Jane Birkin, posing in it at the peak of her career in 1969, too. The year in which Birkin’s sighing sounds were banned by numerous radio stations throughout the world. These shots were taken during the filming of ‘Cannabis’ when she played the rich daughter of an ambassador falling in love with an American gangster played by Serge Gainsbourg (check some nice chase footage here). Anyone out there who knows what happened to the car? I’m not a fan of motoring investments, but have to admit this could have been a good one.
