This year it seems we can celebrate another birthday every week. For instance, the Unimog which turns 65 this year. Six prototypes were made from 1946 to 1948, then a production run by Boehringer of some 600 cars, after which in 1951 production was taken over by Mercedes-Benz who in their Gaggenau factory made as many as 1005 units the first year alone. At first the Unimog was targeted at farmers as a big tractor for heavy field work, but it was soon realized it did much better as a small truck that was able to tow a weighty load. The Unimog Veteranen Club had a very nice example of a 1957 type 411 on their stand at the recent Techno Classica Essen.
