The Netherlands has three automobile trade associations: FOCWA (coach work), VACO (tyres, wheels) and BOVAG (the rest of the car). Following the 75th anniversary of VACO, John Mulder wrote the book: "VACO 75 years united better" and when selecting the photos the huge number of Volkswagen Transporters was a surprise. The popularity of the Transporter is all the more striking, because Dutch Volkswagen-importer Pon was not liked by everyone in the tyre industry.
Pon had (even then) the habit of removing all non Continental tyres on new Volkswagens and replacing them with Conti's of which Pon was also importer. In the seventies tyre traders remember that from every five Michelin, Dunlop or Pirelli tyres they bought from Pon, four of them had residues of anti-rust underbody protection. Some tyre service companies wanted nothing to do with Pon and Volkswagen, but a lot of them appreciated the Transporter for what it is: a great van.
