In January 2007 Ben de Boer bought a Triumph TR3 roadster. It was in bits and pieces and in a terrible condition. Ben restored the car in three years’ time and since the summer of 2010 the TR3 is back on the road in The Netherlands. Ben has been doing some research in the cars’ history and this is what he found: “In the summer of 2010 I received the Factory Record with the fabrication details as my Triumph in 1957 was delivered. This Factory Record contains a curious surprise, according this document my Triumph TR3 with chassis number TS/15248-L was exhibited at the Leipziger Messe in 1957! Later the TR was exported to the United States, with the original USA car papers I’ve found two previous owners in the USA (Buffalo). In 1993 the car was exported back again from a Junk Yard in Allentown to The Netherlands. With the import papers I found also the three previous owners in Holland. I’m happy with the history results so far, but there is still a grey area from 1957 to 1967. I have no idea when the car was exported to the USA, and was there a private owner in the DDR after the Fair? The only historical information I’ve related to the DDR time is the following: ‘Otto Grotewohl the first President of the DDR, purchased a red TR2 at the Messe in 1955 for his wife. Some years later he bought an TR3 (possible my car).’ This is according Bill Piggots book ‘Triumph by Name Triumph by Nature’.
I would greatly appreciate if someone could help with the further history details of this car with special attention for my main question, has someone an idea if and where this chassis number information possible is registered in the former DDR?”
Can we help Ben de Boer? And in order to get some more photos; detailed information about possible owners in the former DDR and in which year the TR was exported to the USA, see ‘Read More’:
